    Facelift Santa Barbara

A Facelift or Rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure which rejuvenates the facial contours providing a more refreshed and youthful appearance.  Time, gravity, and other factors cause the skin and deeper structures of the face to loose their elasticity and sag.  Atrophy of certain areas of the face also contribute to aging.   A facelift can be individualized to reverse some of the changes caused by the aging process.

General or sedation anesthesia can be used. Incisions are made which are planned to be in an area well hidden from view. After lifting the skin, the facial musculature is repositioned and the facial skin is re-draped. Older methods of facelifting, where the skin is pulled tight, should no longer be used. Modern methods allow for the repositioning of the facial structures and the gentle dredraping of skin to achieve a natural result. The neck area is always included in the face lift and this is where the most dramatic results are seen. A facelift is often performed in combination with eyelid rejuvenation or other facial cosmetic procedures and can be performed at any time when the signs of aging begin to appear. Preventive facelifting is not recommended. Generally. patients are in their late forties or older when they elect to undergo this procedure.

A face lift may take three to four hours to perform. After surgery the face is fitted with a conforming dressing to protect the face overnight. These bandages are changed the first day and replaced with a light wrap. The stitches are normally removed within a week. Patients report little pain associated with surgery. Any discomfort can be treated effectively with oral medication. While complications are rare, they include bleeding, visible scars and nerve injury. Patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following pre and post operative instructions given to them by their surgeon.
