Botox® is one of several preparations of Botulinum Toxin. Others include Dysport and Xeomin. The medicine is injected in or near muscles that cause wrinkles. The muscles are weakened or paralyzed causing the wrinkles to disappear. The procedure is a safe, effective way of treating wrinkles that are caused by muscle contraction. Common areas for treatments include forehead furrows, lines between the eyebrows (“frown lines”) and the lines near the eyes( “crow’s feet”). Less common areas include weakening the muscle around the mouth or neck. Botox will work on any muscle but only those which are not important to normal function should be treated.
Injections are performed in the office and have no down time. The effect of the injections can be seen after a couple of days and may not be completely seen for a week. The effect lasts between 3 and 6 months depending upon how long a patient has been keeping up with the treatments. Minor complications like small bruises at the injection sites are possible.
